Some advices to learn a new language

Ciao!
Here some advices that I hope could be useful to whom is starting the process of learning a new language, in this case, Italian. They come from my own experience as student and as language teacher.

1. DON'T RUSH. If you are learning a new language for pleasure, for work and you don't have a deadline such as an exam at university, take it easy! Lots of students, when they start a new course they ask me: 'How long to become fluent'? At the beginning I used to say something like 'few years, maybe 4,5'. But now my answer is 'A lifetime and it won't be enough.' Learning a language requires time, dedication and practice. Plus, we all have different learning style.

2. PRACTICE OUTSIDE THE CLASS AS MUCH AS YOU CAN. Don't be shy! Use the language whenever you can! Is your boyfriend Italian? Then why are you still talking in English? He can be your perfect guinea pig. Are you afraid of making mistakes? Well, go to number 3 then.

3. MISTAKES ARE YOUR NEW BEST FRIENDS. Yes, for real. It's a simple equation: no mistakes=no learning process. You need to make mistakes, because you need to practice and use the language. You will learn more from your mistakes than from your teacher. Trust me, I'm a teacher.

4. BE CONSTANT. I hope you don't expect to learn Italian with one hour lesson per week???!!! That is simple your starting point. You need to work on your own, at your pace, but constantly. 10,15 minutes every day are better than 2 hours at the weekend. What can you do? Revise, read a short article, read few pages of a book, watch a video on youtube, talk to someone. No Italians around you? That's a bit weird, they are everywhere! But if there's a shortage of Italians where you live, talk to yourself (in Italian). Or find someone on the internet, social media are full of groups dedicate to the study of this language. What is the main objective of all this? To acquire confidence. You might learn a new word every day, but will you remember that word when is time to use it? Maybe. The more you practice, the more that word will become part of your new vocabulary.

Happy learning!
